Garage Floor Epoxy and Concrete Coatings in Round Rock, TX
Garage floor epoxy in Round Rock goes into a housing stock younger than Austin's and a little older than Williamson County's as a whole: in the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, the city's 51,143 housing units have a median year built of 2002, where the City of Austin's is 1994 and the county's 2006 (table B25035). A newer slab still cracks. The American Concrete Institute calls crack-free floors unrealistic, and the Portland Cement Association says hardened concrete shrinks about 1/16 in. in 10 ft as it dries. So the floor we quote here rests on three checks made on site: the moisture rising through the slab, its cracks and joints, and the air and slab temperatures on the day we coat.
Austin Garage Floor Epoxy Co. installs flake, polyaspartic, metallic and commercial resin floors and urethane cement for kitchens, and we stain, polish and resurface slabs; the eight sections below say what changes for each one in Round Rock. The price surveys we cite are national, and none of them prices Round Rock; the national average in HomeGuide's February 2026 epoxy survey is $4 to $10 per installed square foot, and our epoxy flooring cost guide lays the other surveys' rows side by side. Once we have measured the floor and tested the concrete on site, we send a free written quote naming the coating products, the order of the steps, the dates and the price. Round Rock's houses, permit pages, ground and history
By our sums of the Census decade counts, about three in four of Round Rock's housing units were built in 1990 or later. Table B25034 of the 2020-2024 American Community Survey counts 13,813 units built from 2000 to 2009, 11,556 from 2010 to 2019 and 2,832 since 2020, which adds up to 28,201 of the 51,143 units, or 55.1 percent, from 2000 or later. Another 10,415 went up in the 1990s and 7,141 in the 1980s; the 1970s left 3,916, and each earlier decade fewer than 700. Single-family detached houses number 32,923 in table B25024, which works out to 64.4 percent of all units, below the 72.5 percent share that the same table's counts give Williamson County as a whole. QuickFacts puts the city's owner-occupied rate at 55.5 percent.
The City of Round Rock's Building Inspection Division states its rule broadly: "If you are planning to work on any building or structure within the City of Round Rock or in the Chandler Creek and Vista Oaks Municipal Utility Districts, you will need to obtain a building permit." Its Building Inspection and Single-Family Remodel pages list no exempt work and say nothing about flooring, floor covering, painting, tile or other finish work. The Homeowner Projects page puts concrete flatwork, from sidewalks and driveways to "other uncovered concrete surfaces," under the heading "Projects That Do Not Require A Permit But Must Be Built To Code," and a garage floor coating is not on that page either. Ask the division before work starts. Its adopted codes are the 2024 International Residential Code and the 2024 International Building Code.
Our sources describe the ground under Round Rock only at the county and aquifer level. The Handbook of Texas entry for Williamson County gives the east of the county mostly dark loamy to clayey "blackland" soils and the land west of the Balcones fault light to dark loamy soils with limey subsoils, without placing any city on either side. The City's 2019 water conservation plan says "approximately 60 percent of the City is located over the Edwards Aquifer," and the Texas Water Development Board's page on the Edwards (Balcones Fault Zone) Aquifer says it "consists primarily of partially dissolved limestone." Williamson County is one of eight counties under the State's Edwards Aquifer rules, according to TCEQ guide RG-011. For a floor, that means we read the slab itself: its crack pattern, its joints and its moisture test say more about it than a county map does.
Round Rock began in 1848, when a blacksmith from Austin set up shop on the north bank of Brushy Creek, and on August 24, 1854, the town took its name from "a large anvil-shaped limestone rock in Brushy Creek," the Handbook of Texas records. The Chisholm Trail crossed the creek near that rock. When the International-Great Northern Railroad laid its tracks south and east of town in 1876, the community moved toward them, and the first site went into official records as Old Round Rock. The City dates its incorporation to 1913. Its population, 2,811 in 1970, reached 119,468 at the 2020 Census and 141,282 in the Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, growth the Handbook links to Austin's expansion and, in the 1980s, to computer-related industries.
Flake epoxy garage floors on Round Rock slabs from the 1990s on
In a flake floor, vinyl chips are broadcast into a wet, pigmented base coat until the resin disappears under them, and a clear topcoat locks them down. Rust-Oleum's Citadel decorative chip specification (January 2025) lays its base at about 100 square feet per gallon for 16 mils of dry film thickness, or DFT, the cured thickness counted in thousandths of an inch; it then broadcasts flake "to full rejection" and finishes with a clear coat at 12 mils DFT. Torginol rates its flakes at about 5 mils thick. Before the base goes down we fill the cracks and spalls in the slab and tell you which will still read through the chips. Our flake epoxy floors page sets out every layer of the systems we build.
For price, the national rows are the guide, since no survey we cite covers Round Rock. For one car, HomeGuide's February 2026 epoxy survey prints $1,200 to $3,900 installed (288 to 392 square feet); for two, $1,600 to $5,800 (400 to 576); for three, $2,300 to $8,600 (576 to 864). Tire heat is the other factor. Euclid Chemical's bulletin CP-22 says tires heat up as a car is driven, which softens their plasticizers and lets them leach out, and that epoxy and urethane coatings are much more crosslinked than acrylic cure-and-seal products and less likely to mark. In a city the City's history says Interstate 35 brought "within commuting distance of Austin," a car parked after the drive brings those warm tires onto the floor.
Polyaspartic and polyurea in Round Rock: getting the garage back sooner
Polyaspartic, which Laticrete defines as an "aliphatic polyurea," cures faster than epoxy, and for a Round Rock household that parks indoors the traffic times are the reason to choose it. Citadel's ET-80 sheet (CDL-15), stated for 70 to 80 degrees F with the air at 50% relative humidity, lists 2 to 4 hours before foot traffic, 24 before vehicles and 7 days to full cure. Heat cuts the other way: Laticrete warns on its Spartacote Flex Pure sheet that higher temperature or humidity "will shorten working time, dry time and recoat windows," and Citadel's RG-80X topcoat is to be applied only between 30 and 90 degrees F. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Camp Mabry, an Austin station, average 122.8 days a year when the high reaches 90 degrees F or more, an Austin outdoor air figure, not a Round Rock reading or a slab temperature.
Polyaspartic costs more than epoxy in HomeGuide's national surveys, none of which prices Round Rock. HomeGuide's November 2024 polyaspartic page prices the coating at $5 to $12 per installed square foot, or $2,000 to $6,900 for what it calls a standard two-car garage, and its September 2025 polyurea page sets polyurea at $5 to $10. Moisture limits can be tighter too: Simiron's Polyaspartic HS sheet lets the slab read no more than 75% relative humidity under ASTM F2170, the in-situ probe test, where Sika's Sikafloor-264 epoxy sheet allows up to 85%, and Simiron adds that seasonal changes in ground moisture can drive vapor through a slab "regardless of results measured prior to coating application." UV, temperature limits and damp concrete are compared, resin by resin, on our polyaspartic floor coating page.
Metallic epoxy for Round Rock game rooms, garages and showrooms
A metallic floor is a clear epoxy carrying metallic pigment over a solid base color, and its pattern forms as the pigment drifts while the coat cures. Westcoat's Liquid Dazzle specification (revision 2/26) describes a 100% solids epoxy system 38 to 42 mils thick, with the metallic coat troweled at about 50 square feet per gallon, light foot traffic at 12 hours, normal traffic at 24 hours and vehicles at 72 hours. Westcoat limits it to interior use and warns that it "may not hide epoxy patches, rough concrete or shot blast tracks," and Laticrete's pigment sheet states "Mock-ups and field test areas are required."
Round Rock adds one rule to the choice. The City's Other Building Permits page says "Garage conversions are only allowed on lots platted before 2002," so on a lot platted in 2002 or later the garage stays a garage, whatever floor it gets. Showrooms are the other use: Laticrete lists "Car Dealerships" among its pigment's applications, next to "Residential Garages." Published prices are thin and national, and none covers Round Rock: This Old House's March 2026 add-on table carries a metallic epoxy floor line of $5 to $12 per square foot. Our metallic epoxy floors page covers base colors, topcoats and how the finish is cared for.
Commercial epoxy flooring for Round Rock offices, plants and warehouses
Round Rock's commercial floors include corporate headquarters, and the right resin system follows from the wheels, loads and chemicals each slab sees. The City's April 2024 news release says Dell "continues to maintain its corporate campus and headquarters in Round Rock," where it moved its world headquarters in 1994, and the City's history banner names TECO-Westinghouse and Toppan Photomasks among the global headquarters here. Across Williamson County, the 2023 County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau show 382 manufacturing establishments with 10,133 employees, plus 350 in transportation and warehousing. Sherwin-Williams writes that thickness, chemical resistance and life expectancy all climb from thin coatings to slurries, broadcast systems and troweled floors; our commercial epoxy flooring page explains each family.
Aisle marking and tax are two rules that reach a working floor. Federal OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.176(a) says "Permanent aisles and passageways shall be appropriately marked," and OSHA's 1972 interpretation letter leaves the color of aisle lines open, so long as they clearly mark the aisle, and calls any width of 2 inches or more acceptable. On tax, Texas Comptroller publication 94-116 lists warehouses, office buildings and manufacturing facilities among its examples of nonresidential real property and says the total charge for repairing or remodeling such property is taxable. The City of Round Rock's own page gives the sales tax rate in Round Rock as 8.25 percent, with 6.25 percent collected by the State and 2 percent by the City. How tax applies to the job is spelled out in our quote, and any doubt goes to the Comptroller or a tax adviser.
Commercial kitchen flooring for Round Rock restaurants and brewhouses
A Round Rock kitchen floor answers to the State's food rules. The Texas Food Establishment Rules, which the Department of State Health Services dates effective August 8, 2021 under 25 TAC Chapter 228, take in the FDA Food Code 2017 by reference, and the agency's quick reference words the floor items as "smooth, durable, and easily cleanable," "nonabsorbent" under normal use and "coved and closed" where floor meets wall. Demand is wide: Williamson County held 1,375 accommodation and food service establishments employing 29,148 in the Census Bureau's 2023 business counts. For hot, wet rooms the makers point to urethane cement, and Dur-A-Flex's Poly-Crete HF sheet typically applies it 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick, rates it from -100 to 220 degrees F in service, and suits it to temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees F for application.
The data sheet also sets how long a kitchen stays shut: Poly-Crete HF takes light traffic in 6 to 8 hours and full service in 3 to 5 days, and Sherwin-Williams credits its Poly-Crete MD's thermal shock resistance to a coefficient of thermal expansion "similar to concrete." Wet floors need texture, and TCNA notes that the ANSI A326.3 friction standard leaves its Oils/Greases category to a value the maker declares. The Comptroller's publication 94-116 also names restaurants as nonresidential property, the class whose whole repair or remodeling charge carries tax, and the Comptroller has the last word on any one job. Cove base, floor drains and slip ratings are on our restaurant and brewery floors page.
Stained concrete for Round Rock patios and interior slabs
Staining suits a sound slab whose marks you are willing to keep, because the color forms in the concrete rather than on it. The ASCC Concrete Polishing Council defines acid stain as a "Reactive solution of one or more metal salts stabilized by acid that produces coloration in a concrete substrate," and its glossary calls a dye a colorant that "penetrates into the concrete while it is in solution." Saw cuts, patches and cracks therefore stay visible in the finished floor. For existing concrete, HomeGuide's February 2026 staining survey runs from $3 to $15 a square foot, national, with acid-based stain reaching $25; none of the surveys prices Round Rock. Our stained concrete floors page sets out stains and sealers side by side.
If the slab you want stained sits in one of Round Rock's 10,415 housing units from the 1990s or 7,141 from the 1980s, and carpet or tile is coming up, the adhesive under it has to come off first, since a stain colors the concrete itself. Angi's April 2026 polishing survey prices removal of old coatings, adhesives or carpet at $1 to $3 a square foot, national. Outdoors, Euclid Chemical explains efflorescence as salts that water carries up through concrete and leaves on the surface, the secondary kind arriving mainly after rain, from irrigation or from the soil around the slab. The City's Homeowner Projects page lists concrete flatwork but says nothing about staining or sealing an existing slab. HomeGuide advises resealing stained concrete every 1 to 3 years.
Polished concrete for Round Rock stores, offices and slab rooms
Polished concrete is the existing slab ground, densified and refined to a set gloss, so it fits floors that are hard, sound and open enough for the grinders to run. The ASCC Concrete Polishing Council names three stages by grit: grinding with abrasives of "100 grit or lower," honing in the "100-400 grit range" and polishing at "800 grit or higher," with a densifier, a silicate that reacts in the surface to form more calcium silicate hydrate, applied along the way. Size changes the price per foot. HomeGuide's national February 2026 survey prices small jobs higher: under 1,000 square feet often $8 to $15 or more a square foot, and over 5,000 square feet as little as $3 to $6.
Round Rock's retail floors, a base the Handbook of Texas puts at "over 300 retail businesses" in the 1980s, are where a polish's short closure counts: PROSOCO says of its lithium densifier that "Most floors can be opened to traffic within one hour of treatment." Grinding raises silica dust, and federal OSHA's Table 1 in 29 CFR 1926.1153, entry (xiii), allows walk-behind floor grinders with water fed to the cut or a dust collector whose filter is 99% efficient or better, plus a HEPA-filtered vacuum between passes indoors; we run the collector. In the Council's wet tests, polished floors "significantly exceeded" a dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.42, even at high gloss. Our polished concrete floors page explains gloss levels.
Concrete resurfacing for worn Round Rock garage and shop slabs
Resurfacing lays a thin cement-based wearing layer over a slab that is sound but worn, scaled or pitted, and a coating, stain or polish usually follows. Euclid Chemical's Euco Re-Cover sheet (Rev. 10.25), which lists garage floors among its uses, builds from a featheredge to 3/8 inch, asks for a profile of at least CSP 2, meaning concrete surface profile 2 under ICRI Guideline 310.2, the roughness scale the sheet cites, and takes feet after 4 hours and rubber tires after 12 hours, at 75 degrees F. Cracks decide how long it looks right: ARDEX says on its CD sheet that cracks "may telegraph up into the surface in any area that exhibits movement." Our concrete resurfacing page covers patching and toppings.
A slab that moves is past resurfacing. Wolverine Coatings' bulletin calls a slab that is "crumbling, rocking back and forth, heaving, or sinking" an unlikely candidate for coating without repair, and the City of Round Rock lists "Foundation Repair" among its residential permit types, so ask the City about a permit before slab repair begins. For a sound slab, HomeGuide's February 2026 resurfacing page, national, gives $3 to $7 per square foot overall and $3 to $5 for a garage floor of basic design, and puts a 24 by 24 two-car garage or driveway in the range of $1,700 to $2,900; HomeAdvisor's June 2026 page warns that some contractors charge a minimum fee of $500 to $1,000.
Round Rock floor coating questions
What does garage floor epoxy cost in Round Rock?
No price survey we cite publishes a Round Rock figure, so the answer is the national range. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 page puts the normal range for an epoxy floor at $1,650 to $3,494, with an average of $2,526, and This Old House's March 2026 page gives $3 to $12 a square foot with a contractor. Angi's August 2026 page says resin type and floor size drive most of the cost, along with surface preparation. Crack repair, a moisture-mitigating primer or an old coating to strip adds to any of those figures, which is why our written quote follows a visit.
Does the City of Round Rock want a permit for a garage floor coating?
The City of Round Rock's pages do not say either way, so ask the Building Inspection Division before work starts. The division's general rule is that work "on any building or structure" in the City or in the Chandler Creek and Vista Oaks Municipal Utility Districts needs a building permit, and neither that page nor the Single-Family Remodel page mentions flooring or coatings. The Homeowner Projects page lists concrete flatwork such as driveways among projects that do not require a permit but must be built to code, and it does not mention coating a garage floor.
Will cracks come back through a coated floor in Round Rock?
Some will, and we tell you which. ICRI's terminology separates a dormant crack, one "not likely to become active in the future," from an active crack that is still moving, and Sherwin-Williams warns that "Not honoring dynamic joints can lead to cracks in the surface." Its joint guide recommends honoring a moving joint with a saw cut through the new floor, 1/4 inch wide and at least 3/4 inch deep. We repair cracks and spalls before the primer. NRMCA adds that a slab "deflects depending on load and support conditions," and Blackland clays such as Houston Black, which the NRCS describes with "High shrink-swell potential," give support that changes as the soil wets and dries.
Is sales tax charged on garage floor coating in Round Rock?
The Texas Comptroller's publication 94-116 answers by type of property, not by city: "Labor to repair, remodel, or restore residential real property is not taxable," while the total charge for nonresidential repair or remodeling is taxable. How materials are taxed depends on whether the contract is lump-sum or separated. The City of Round Rock gives the sales tax rate in Round Rock as 8.25 percent. The written quote we send names the tax treatment, and the final word on it rests with the Comptroller or a tax professional.
When can the car return to a newly coated garage in a Round Rock summer?
That depends on the product and the temperature it cures at, so the times come from its data sheet. Westcoat rates its EC-36 epoxy for wheels after 72 hours, at 72 degrees F; Sherwin-Williams' ArmorSeal 1000 HS sheet puts heavy traffic at 48 to 72 hours when it is 77 degrees F; Citadel's ET-80 polyaspartic allows vehicles after a day at 70 to 80 degrees F. Heat shortens pot life: Sikafloor-264's sheet gives about 25 minutes at 68 degrees F and about 15 at 86 degrees F. We give you your floor's traffic times in writing, and our guide to epoxy's pros and cons covers heat.
More towns we work in around Austin
Each town below has its own building department and its own Census housing figures, so its page uses those, and its own permit pages where they could be read, rather than Round Rock's. The Austin entry leads to our home page, where the City of Austin's exempt-work list and its 2024 code adoption are set out.
